On October 13th at 03:11 UTC an alert from the vessel "FOM", under the flag of Panama was received by the duty officer of the State Maritime Coordination Center of the State Enterprise "Marine Search and Rescue Service" of the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine. The vessel was heading towards port Hereke (The Republic of Turkey) with the cargo of scrap metal and with 8 crew members aboard.
The alert was identified and confirmed by the MRCC duty officer using the appropriate databases and technical resources.
The "distress" stage was announced by the duty officer and the necessary measures regarding search and rescue operations were taken.
A decision to use the specialized fleet of SE "MSRS" was made, that is to use the sea tug "Sapfir" and search and rescue speed boat PRK-01, which were heading to the place of conduction of SAR operation.
Basing on the International SAR Manual (IAMSAR) the m/v "MINERVA MARINE" was defined as on scene coordinator, as it was close to the m/v "FOM".
According to the Plan of Cooperation with the Main Aviation Coordination SAR Center of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, an aircraft AN-32 was involved into operation. The aircraft got to the place of distress, where it established connection with the vessels and reported about the situation.
The rescue vessel "Sapfir" and PRK-01 continued heading towards the place of distress.
At 07:55 UTC the MRCC duty officer contacted the captain of the m/v "MINERVA MARINE" and received confirmation, that all the 8 crew members were safe.
The vessel "FOM» sank, life raft and emergency buoy were left floating, which was reported in the Notices to Mariners.
